IRS No Longer Accepting Paper Checks

Effective September 30, 2025, the IRS will no longer accept paper checks for tax payments or issue
refund checks. This change is part of a new executive order aimed at modernizing the federal tax system.
All payments and refunds must be processed electronically using one of the following methods:

IRS Direct Pay
Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
Debit or Credit Card
Digital Wallets

Why is this change happening?
Enhanced security
Reduced risk of fraud
Estimated savings of over $650 million annually in processing costs

What you should do:
Ensure your direct deposit information is current with the IRS
Begin using electronic payment options for all future tax transactions

Please note that limited exceptions may apply. We encourage you to contact your tax advisor for personalized
guidance.
